Requests For Blood Tests and/or Immunisation For IVF Clinics

We have received a number of reports from practices about Infertility Services (NHS and Non NHS) sending patients back to the practice for blood tests and/or immunisations.

Examples of this have been patients told by the Infertility clinic to attend their GP practice to get routine bloods and viral serology to be carried out. Also patients are being told to see their GP for courses of immunisations such as Hep B.

The LMC would like to stress to practices that this is unfunded work and is not included in practices’ GMS Global Sum.

The LMC is continuing to pursue this issue with the infertility services. To make the situation clear to patients at the outset, a letter could be sent to patients at the time of referral informing them that tests and treatments required by the infertility service are not carried out by the GP practice.

We have drafted a sample letter which can be sent to the appropriate patients at the time of referral to the infertility service which they can take with them to the clinic.
